Sentinel Poetry Book Competition 2019

The 5th  Sentinel Poetry Book Competition is for full-length poetry collections in English language by single authors, on any subject, in any style, up to 70 A4 pages long.

Judged by NOEL WILLIAMS, three collections will be published in 2020 by SPM Publications.

In addition to publishing their collections, the winning poets will each receive 20 copies of their books plus cash prizes of £300 (1st), £200 (2nd) and £100 (3rd).

Eligibility: Poets of all nationalities over 18 years old living in any part of the world are eligible to enter this competition.

Stage One of the competition will close on 31st July 2019.

A shortlist of 5 collections will be announced on 7th October 2019.

Stage Two of the competition will close on 6th November 2019.

Three prizewinning collections will be announced on 20th December 2019.


- Submit a Title Page, a Contents Page, and 20 A4 pages of poetry (22 pages in total) under a Pen Name. Any number of poems may make up the 20 pages but every poem must start on a new page  and should be single-spaced.

- A Cover Note or Entry Form detailing the author's real name, pen name, full postal address, email address and telephone number should accompany the submission.

- All poems submitted in Stage One must be original, previously unpublished and not under consideration for publication elsewhere during the period up to 7th October 2019.

- Online submissions must be made by midnight on the 31st of July. Postal entries must be post-marked by 31/07/2019


This stage is for the 5 shortlisted collections only.

- Submit your full collection - up to 70 A4 Pages of poetry by the 6th of November 2019.  In addition to the poetry pages, the collection should have a Title Page, a Contents Page, an Acknowledgments Page detailing where the poems have previously been published, a Preface, and a Dedication Page (optional). The full collection may include previously published poems and prize-winning poems, but must not have been previously published in book form. 


Noel Williams is the author of Out of Breath (Cinnamon 2014) and Point Me at the Stars (Indigo Dreams, 2017), as well as academic books about writing. His poetry has been published widely in the UK as well as in the USA, Mexico and India. His work has been commended or shortlisted in dozens of competitions and he’s won quite a few prizes, including several in Sentinel Poetry competitions. He has been nominated for the Forward Prize four times, and once for the Pushcart Prize. He was the first Poet in Residence at Sheffield's Bank Street Arts Centre, where he's also exhibited several times, together with exhibitions in several other galleries in Yorkshire. He's co-editor of Antiphon magazine (antiphon.org.uk), Reviews Editor for Orbis (www.orbisjournal.com) and recently edited the anthology Millstone Grit (Antiphon Press 2016), as well as being a mentor for other successful writers and a reviewer for various magazines such as The North and Envoi. He’s also Professor Emeritus of Sheffield Hallam University.
